Books on Prescription Schemes

Healthcare organisations - if you already run a BOP scheme and would like it to be listed here, please email us.

In June 2013 the new Books on Prescription scheme launches across England. The national scheme, already running in Wales and parts of Scotland, is designed to help you to manage your mental wellbeing using cognitive behavioural therapy-based self-help books, all written by experts. The scheme is endorsed by health professionals and supported by public libraries.

Click here to visit the Books on Prescription website.

The books recommended on the scheme provide helpful information on mental health problems ranging from depression and low mood, to anxiety and sleep problems (see below for a list of all conditions currently treated on the scheme). As well as providing valuable information, the books are practical and offer step-by-step techniques and strategies for successfully managing and overcoming mental health problems.

How does it work?

If you go to see your GP with a common mental health problem, such as stress or anxiety, you may be recommended a self-help book by your GP, psychological wellbeing practitioner or another health professional.  All of the books being used in the Books on Prescription scheme have been selected by a panel of experts and have been tried and tested and found to be useful.  They are available to borrow from the local library of participating schemes.

Can books really help?

The Scheme works within NICE guidelines, and uses 30 self-help books endorsed and recommended by health care professionals as having evidenced benefits to sufferers of the mental and emotional problems listed below. The scheme is supported by the Royal Colleges of GPs, Nursing and Psychiatrists, the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies and by the Department of Health through its Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme. Although books can often work on their own, you may also wish to have support from a health professional - your GP should be able to help with this.

The following conditions are currently covered by the scheme:

Chronic Fatigue

Chronic Pain

Health Anxiety

Obsessions and Compulsions

Relationship Problems

Sleep Problems

Social Phobia

The healthcare organisations below run Books on Prescription schemes, usually in conjunction with their local Library Services. The list is not comprehensive; to find out about a scheme in your area, ask at your GP's surgery or local library.
